Thousands in Berlin Demand Merz’s Resignation: A Sign of German Discontent?

(SeaPRwire) –   By: Julian Holbrooke
Friedrich Merz’s leadership is under intense fire. Thousands took to Berlin’s streets, demanding his resignation. This isn’t just a small protest; it reflects growing public discontent.

Officially, protesters called for snap elections and tighter immigration controls. Organizers registered 10,000 attendees, while police estimated around 4,000. They carried German flags and placards with slogans like “Not my chancellor” and “Merz must go.” The non – partisan group Project M1llion organized the rally, uniting various disaffected Germans.

Behind the scenes, the group’s 11 – point platform reveals deeper geopolitical intentions. It calls for the government’s resignation, new elections, and an end to financial support for “any kind of warring party.” Germany has given billions to Ukraine since 2022, though Ukraine isn’t named in the platform. The group also wants to roll back green policies and deport undocumented migrants.

An INSA poll shows 77% of Germans are dissatisfied with Merz, and 78% with his coalition government. INSA head Hermann Binkert said a government that can’t convince its voters is doomed. The geopolitical pendulum in Germany may be shifting, and Merz’s government faces a serious challenge.
