Vietnam’s Strike Against Illicit Gambling Marketing: A Bold Move with Global Implications

(AsiaGameHub) –   By: Jonathan Vance
Vietnam’s crackdown on the illicit gambling marketing network is a significant step. Hanoi Police raided Super Thi Seo Media Services, arresting its CEO Pham Ngoc Manh. Allegedly, the group generated VND3.7bn from promoting illegal sites since 2026. The raids also found VND7bn in cash and assets, along with computers and phones. Cryptocurrency played a key role, with Manh accused of using 41 wallets for illegal payments.

This approach could be replicated. Targeting those enabling the black market, like marketing and payment processors, is crucial. Japan, for example, arrested individuals involved in illegal gambling, including operators and processors. It also worked with regulators to block access for Japanese users. While there’s demand for online gambling in Japan, the government tightened oversight due to social harms.

Vietnam’s action sets a precedent. It shows that going after the marketing funnel can effectively combat the black market. This could lead to a more regulated online environment, protecting consumers and reducing the negative impacts of illegal gambling.
